The short answer is that most insurance companies and government payers only accept ICD codes on insurance claims.
But I have always used DSM codes
Most of the DSM codes are similar or identical to ICD-9 codes. More than likely, that DSM code that you have been using is actually an ICD-9 code.
What about ICD-10?
According to the American Psychological Association (APA), all healthcare providers covered by the Health Insurance and Accountability Act (HIPAA) must shift their coding practices to use the World Health Organization's (WHO) International Classification of Diseases 10th revision (ICD-10) codes sets by October 1, 2015. The HIPAA mandates mean that mental and behavioral health professionals must start using ICD-10 coding on October 1, 2015 or they may be faced with fines and other sanctions.
