A taxonomy code is a hierarchical code that indicates a healthcare profession. The code set is maintained by the Washington Publishing Company. The taxonomy code is used to identify your healthcare profession (i.e. Speech Pathologist, or Physical Therapist).
You could be getting this error because 1.) the taxonomy code you have entered for the rendering provider is not valid or 2.) the taxonomy code that you have entered for the rendering provider does not match what the payer has in their system.
How to Fix
The taxonomy code for the rendering provider (as opposed to the billing provider) is on the add / edit provider form in Therabill.
To get to the provider form, click on Providers in the top navigation bar of Therabill. In your provider list, find the provider associated with this claim and then click on the edit icon associated with that provider.
On the edit provider form, you will see a text box labeled Taxonomy. You can start typing the profession there (i.e. Speech Pathologist). If you see the profession in the drop down list click on it and it will fill in with that professions taxonomy code.
How to get your taxonomy code.
When you get your NPI, you must supply a taxonomy code. You can always go look yourself up in the NPI database to find the taxonomy code that you supplied when you got your NPI.
- Go to NPI Registry search (link valid at time of writing). You can also Google "NPI Registry Search".
- Click on Search for an Individual Provider
- In search form that opens, Enter your NPI (the rendering NPI) and then search.
- Go to your record in the search results. Somewhere within your record you should see your taxonomy code that you supplied when you applied for your NPI.
