What is the Alpha Prefix?

The subscriber ID (primary ID) for Blue Cross Blue Shield members begins with three alphabetic characters.  These alphabetic characters are referred to as the Alpha Prefix.    The Alpha Prefix identifies the state (a state may have more than one Alpha Prefix though). 

When you submit a claim to Blue Cross Blue Shield, you always submit it to your local Blue Cross Blue Shield (the Blue Cross Blue Shield that you are a provider for or have shared your NPI with).  Blue Cross Blue Shield will then route the claim based on the Alpha Prefix.
