Search CPT Codes by Keyword

Therabill will allow you to search the entire CPT code database from the add / edit session form.  In addition to keyword searches, other tools are built in to the search form that are meant to help you find CPT codes that are relevant to you.  Therabill continues to license and update the CPT code database every year and offers the CPT code search free of charge as a courtesy to Therabill members.

How to Search CPT Codes

The CPT search tool is built in to the add / edit session form in Therabill.  Simply open up the add or edit session form and mouse in to the Service Code text box under the Billing & Coding section.  When the service code text box receives focus, the CPT Search form will automatically open (see image to the right).

The CPT Search form has two main components: the search text box and the results container.  The search text box will allow you to type in keywords or a CPT code.  Therabill will then search for the keyword(s) or the CPT code and display the search results in the results container.

Smarter Searching

The Therabill CPT Search form was built to help you find CPT codes that are relevant to the session you are adding.  When searching,  Therabill takes into account the date of service and the profession of the rendering provider that you currently have entered in the add / edit session form.  This information is used in several different ways.

When Searching

When you type a search term in to the search text box, Therabill will return codes that other Therabill members (of the same profession as the rendering provider you have entered in to the add / edit session form) are using with higher rank than other CPT codes that meet your search terms.  In addition, Therabill takes in to account the date of service of the session and will not return CPT codes that have been discontinued prior to the current date of service you have entered. NOTE: If no date of service is entered, then Therabill assumes the current date.

When No Search Term is Entered

If you do not have a search term entered in to the search text box, then Therabill will do one of two things depending on whether you have a rendering provider entered on the add / edit session form.

• If a rendering provider is entered, then Therabill will display a list of CPT codes that other Therabill members of the same profession are using.  Therabill uses the taxonomy code that you have entered for the rendering provider to determine the rendering providers profession.  If you do not have a taxonomy code entered for the rendering provider, then this will not be available.
• If a rendering provider is not entered or taxonomy code is not available, then Therabill will list CPT codes that you (or your clinic) have used in the past.

The Search Results

The search results will display the CPT code (in bold and in bigger font).  In addition the medium American Medical Association description is given directly to the right (on the same line).  To aide in correct coding of your insurance claims, starting for CPT codes in the 2013 CPT code database, in addition to the medium AMA description, a layman's  description is also supplied.  The layman's description is displayed underneath the AMA medium description of the CPT code.

If the code is discontinued, the date that the code will no longer be valid is displayed in red font underneath the CPT code description.

Closing the CPT Search Form

The CPT Search form can be closed using several methods:

• Remove focus from the Service Code text box on the add / edit session form.
• Click anywhere else on the add / edit session form (except within the CPT Search form or on the Service Code entry text box).
• Click the close link at the top right of the CPT Search form.
